Previously, Dr. Kohatsu was Medical Director, California Department of Health Care Services where he provided medical, policy, and analytic support for the Medi-Cal Program which serves about 14 million members. During his time at the California Department of Health Care Services, Dr. Kohatsu was charged with advancing population health, improving clinical quality and coordinating the development and implementation of the Department’s Quality Strategy. He has held leadership positions in government and the private sector, and was an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa. He has over 30 years of practice experience with interests in preventive medicine, population health, clinical quality, patient safety, and social determinants of health.

Dr. Kohatsu received his AB in Human Biology from Stanford University; his MD from the University of Pittsburgh, and MPH from the University of Minnesota. His residency training in preventive medicine was at the University of Minnesota and the University of Arizona. He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention at the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention. Dr. Kohatsu is board certified in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine. He is a past president of the American College of Preventive Medicine and is on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
