Choosing Wisely®

Choosing Wisely®, an initiative of the ABIM Foundation, is working to promote discussions between providers and patients to ensure the right care is delivered at the right time.  ICER has been involved with this initiative in several ways:

  1. ICER is participating in Choosing Wisely Massachusetts, a multi-stakeholder collaboration aimed at promoting the use of Choosing Wisely in Massachusetts.  The initiative’s website contains patient-centered information to support conversations between providers and patients. Read More.

  2. For its CEPAC program, ICER conducted an analysis to help stakeholders in New England distinguish the greatest opportunities for leveraging the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Choosing Wisely list in efforts to reduce unnecessary care.

  3. With funding from the ABIM Foundation, ICER produced a series of analyses to support implementation efforts by Choosing Wisely and its physician partners.  Each report provided a summary evidence justifications for inclusion on a Choosing Wisely Top 5 List; a description of current use and variation in practice patterns; estimates of cost impact of inappropriate use; descriptions of the “sociology of practice” including the factors related to overuse and variation; and opportunities for improvement and a description of current best practices.  Each report also included a summary rating to help decision-makers use the information to prioritize change efforts.  The seven analyses are linked below:
